The Issue: Does Your Business have a Personality Model?
A while back, I wrote about the “Purple Cow,” a term invented by entrepreneur, author and public speaker, Seth Godin. A “Purple Cow” is his term for doing something remarkable in your business or personal life. It is something that stands out, something that is unique that business speaking here business wise, will make your customers or clients want to keep coming back.
They say competition can be healthy and it may be to some degree, but if your competition is your main motivation in your business, valuable time in developing your “Purple Cow(s)“ may be at risk.
As a business owner, developing your own business personality model is what will first make you remarkable, and subsequently may have you coming up with several “Purple Cows” to utilize.
For example, if I had two salons that styled my hair the way I liked, how would I determine which salon to go to exclusively?
My decision would be based on which salon had established their business personality model and a “Purple Cow“ or two.
You know the “Purple Cow…” crackers and cheese on a small but elegant serving dish along with a gourmet hot cup of coffee served in a fancy coffee mug that clients would really appreciate and enjoy while sitting with foils in their hair.
You know, the salon, that also had a variety of music playing to satisfy the souls of its clients, and not music that is just being played for the staff.
And yes, the salon that had a few magazines or books available for their clients at arms reach. Even books that could be taken home to finish the read.
Yes, the salon, that had “Purple Cows“ and were remarkable because they offered their clients a snack… which may very well fill in a lunch gap or a low energy time of day. A salon that provides a variety of listening music, books or magazines and a hot fancy mug of gourmet coffee or herbal tea is the salon that I would exclusively patronize.
Giving your business a personality model, and a “Purple Cow“ or two just requires some creativity and does not always take a great amount to reap some fantastic rewards!
