Celebrity Interview: Meet Rebecca Robeson, Interior Designer
Rebecca Robesonâs Interior Designs have been on the front cover of San Diegoâs Home/Garden Lifestyles magazine, to name just one publication where her amazing talent has been featured. I discovered Rebecca on her design channel on YouTube about a couple of months ago, when I was searching for design ideas. Her work is unbelievable; she has done beautiful home remodels that are breathtaking upon completion. I have already learned some fascinating ideas from her channel, which I am going to do over the summer in my own home.
Recently, Robeson Design was approached by one of the largest YouTube contributors, eHow Home, an original Youtube channel that has thousands of âHow Toâ videos. Most anything one wants to know, eHow will very likely have it. Robeson Design Inc., which may have the largest piece of Interior Design related content on YouTube, is moving forward with eHowHome to create the most exciting, most diversified Home Improvement/Interior Design videos in the world. Rebecca will travel twice a month from San Diego to Los Angeles to be a guest on their show. I am sure Robeson Design viewers will want to follow her to eHow to see what she is up to there.
Not only is Rebecca gifted in Interior Design, but she is a lady who is gorgeous, fashionable, an articulate communicator, and has a great sense of humor coupled with an inviting and compelling personality that makes you just want to keep going back to watch her many inspiring videos on Interior Design.
I am now a subscriber to her channel on YouTube, as I donât want to miss her Makeover Mondays where a weekly winner who has entered the contest, subscribed to her channel, sent in a picture of their room, along with the measurements and answers a questionnaire, receives a virtual 3D room design by Rebecca.
In a interview with Rebecca I asked her a few questions for OEP readers to get to know her (if they donât already).
Q: Did you attend college to become a designer or is it a talent you possess?
A: No I did not attend any higher education for design. In fact, I barely passed lower education except for my classes on day dreaming which I excelled in but unfortunately were not offered in my school so I created them myself… in my head. This later became a huge bonus in my unique ability to visualize absolutely anything when it came to what any given room could look like. Being able to see the end from the beginning was all I needed to get me on the path to my ultimate end goal.
Q: You have an energy, and humor about you…coupled by being so personable. Are you like this off camera too?
A: I go back and forth between wanting to let my viewers see the real me and wanting my viewers to see who I wish I was…perfect in everyway… Silly I know. As far as off camera, I flew to Northern Virginia to meet a YouTube subscriber and do a 5 day mini-makeover on her home. We had a wonderful time together and her home turned out fabulous given the time constraints, but I suppose the nicest compliment she gave me was to say I was exactly the same in real life as I am on camera.
Q: Where do you see Robeson Design Inc. in about 3-5 years?
A: I would like to have a huge following on YouTube. It has been an uphill climb to get the concept out there that YouTube has more to offer than funny âgone viralâ videos. Itâs the perfect âHow Toâ destination spot. On my channel, I try to mix a few things… infuse âhow toâ instructions or how I came up with my design direction while I entertain them a bit with great quality video editing. I mix some humor, fashion and then wow them with before and afters of the homes I am privileged to design. With that, I mix the ârealityâ of my life as a wife, mother, boss and business owner.
A lot of women and even young girls are interested in becoming a designer and would love my advice on how to enter the field. For me, it was natural. Wild horses couldnât have kept me from it. If I wasnât decorating my own home, I was moving furniture in a friends house or heck…even rearranging the furniture in a hotel room leaving it that way for the housekeepers to enjoy. So, I didnât need advice or direction but I know there are thousands who do, so I would like to be looked to as a big encourager of people with natural talent and drive to go for and accomplish what ever their heart desires.
As for as my real job as principal of Robeson Design Inc., I would like to continue to accept commissions to completely design high-end residential homes for a select few clients, allowing me the time to pursue my love for entertaining and inspiring the world via television or video.
Q: I really feel you will have a television show of your own. You have all the attributes from beauty, voice, fashion…Would you like your own television show someday?
A: Yes. Being behind a camera is as natural to me as talking to my mother on the phone, For some reason, it doesnât scare me. I just pretend Iâm talking to a real person on the other side. This past year I was heavily involved with a production company as well as a well known cable television network who were very interested in signing contracts with me and some of my family members to produce a Reality TV Show about my life and design business… I walked away from the table. If I came across the ârightâ television opportunity, one that focused on my design abilities but also allowed me to be my naturally quirky self, I would go for it in a heartbeat.
Q: Tell me of two long term goals that you have, even if they are not related to design.
A: My personal long term goals have already been met, so I will answer as it relates to design. I want to have over one million subscribers on YouTube which could come as a result of all my hard work, generosity with my viewers and includes a guest appearance on The Ellen Show. I would be introduced as the woman who gives away free bedroom design plans. My ulitmate goal is to be sought after for product endorsements. I would absolutely love to design my own towels, place mats, dishes, window coverings, wallpaper…heck even textiles. Can you imagine, at Target, Rebecca Robeson dish towels…it would be awesome!
Q: So you agree that viewers are also attracted to your show because you look so fashionable, let us into your kitchen with your daughter making a delicious looking dessert, letting us meet your little doggies…
A:That a nice way to phrase a question. I hope my viewers feel like I let them in, Iâm a pretty open book, although that can be a bit scary in this day and age of people being able to express their opinion anonymously via computer screens. I think in general, if people see you as a giver not a taker, they are inclined to warm up to you. That is where I feel like I am doing something quite different on YouTube. I actually enjoy reading my comments and responding to many of them.
I feel like I am able to bring to everyday people what has largely been reserved for the rich.I have torn away all pretense, I give away trade secrets as they (designers) call them. I donât mark up peoples purchases and most importantly, I donât have a degree. I believe everyone who has a desire to live in the most beautiful spaces they can afford should be able to do so…no matter what their socioeconomic background. It takes more than money however, it takes talent and an eye, that is what I give away for free to my viewers, Maybe that is what comes across…I certainly hope so!
Rebecca went on to explain that she grew up in a home where her father had a humble job as a Baptist Minister: âI love and respect my parents more than anything.â Rebecca explains that she grew up with an insatiable desire to make everything around her beautiful and subsequently admits to being the Garage Sale Queen, accomplishing her ability to negotiate low purchasing into high selling prices as she turned over her treasures.
Most Interior Designers have a designation of ASID behind their names. Rebecca Robeson had for a time GFB behind her name, which is the acronym for âGifted at Birth,â and she undoubtedly is an extremely gifted and talented lady.
Now, there is no need for any âlettersâ behind her name as her business, her work and the designing she has done for some of the most prestigious homes in Southern California is recognition of talent and hard work.
