Biscuits and Gravy: “From the Heart”
Ever see the old movie reels of a gentleman placing his coat over a puddle for a woman to walk across? It’s a timeless classic for sure, and everyone knows and understands the reference, but how many times in life do we see commitment to one another on the level of this timeless gesture?
People who care for others and care for those in their life, often do gestures of this scale that perhaps we don’t recognize and take for granted. Up until lately, I have noticed that such a gesture has gone not particularly unnoticed but unstated in how much true compassion and heart is truly there.
I had the distinct pleasure several months back of working with someone who had a tremendous heart and a great character. When I left my position, they went out of their way to throw a massive event of a going away party for me like I had never seen. This all in complete disregard to the fact that they were going through something very taxing in their own life. I knew that she was going through troubling times, but she pushed that aside to make me feel incredibly special that day yet leading me to think the entire crew had cooked up the plan when most of the work was her own.
Months down the road, when my life grew rocky as my fiancee and I split up, she was right by my side to give me a shoulder to cry on. Then as things grew far worse for me, and one person tried their best to destroy my birthday, she showed up with gifts to brighten up and salvage the day. Though her own personal troubles pressed on, with mean-spirited people simply trying to destroy her life, she was there for me in my greatest time of need, as I was for the first time alone in a foreign country. Again, later when I found news that tore me apart, she was right by my side to help comfort me and pull me through, once more casting aside all her own troubles.
Thankfully for me, I saw the writing on my own heart’s wall and have begun to see this angel of my heart. Daina, is a true example of that special person in our lives that, despite any hardship or turmoil that may be tossed in their path through no fault of their own, shines as a bright star to warm our hearts and our lives. Though we must in these cases return this most special of favors, because when an act is truly from the heart as it warms ours, we must take care to spread that warmth.
